Same-Day Sickness

People can't always wait to see a doctor, which is why James B. Cordell, MD, in La Jolla, San Diego, offers a same-day sickness service to his patients. This service helps people who need immediate medical care for an illness that’s not serious enough for the emergency room. Dr. Cordell has the necessary tools on hand to do a quick assessment and make a diagnosis, so patients can feel better without waiting days for an appointment.

Same-Day Sickness Q & A

What should patients do if they need a fast appointment?

All you need to do is call the office and talk to a member of Dr. Cordell's staff. They’ll take your information and make you a same-day appointment, if necessary. The medical professional on the phone can also do a basic assessment of your situation and let you know if you can wait to see Dr. Cordell or if you should go to the hospital for emergency treatment. If you’re sent to the ER, Dr. Cordell's office can contact the ER and let them know to expect you.

Can patients just walk into the practice for same-day care?

Yes, that is certainly one option. If you know you need to see the doctor, it's OK to just come to the office. It's usually better to call, though. That way, the staff can tell you the best time to come in, so you don't have a long wait. The earlier you call, the better, as slots fill up quickly.

What types of sickness need same-day care?

Generally speaking, the same-day sickness service is restricted to minor but urgent medical problems such as:

  • Cold
  • Flu symptoms
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Sore throat
  • Rash
  • Earache
  • Cough
  • Musculoskeletal problems
  • Abscess

Same-day care works best for current patients. A new patient may not be able to use this service.

Are there any restrictions for same-day sickness care?

Not really, but new patients should not rely on this service. Dr. Cordell may still see a new patient under the right circumstances and if his schedule allows, but same-day care really works best for established patients.

How do people know if they should go to the hospital or not?

Anyone with a medical emergency should call 911, not the doctor's office. Always go to the emergency room for:

  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • An obvious injury such as a fracture
  • Head trauma
  • Extreme pain
  • High fever
  • Loss of consciousness

Any serious symptom needs immediate emergency evaluation, and that’s not what the same-day service offers. When it comes to medical emergencies, err on the side of caution and go to the emergency room. Save the same-day sickness care for minor problems only.
